The Grade 1, Unit 7: Linear Measurement is a supplemental resource designed to meet the 2020 Ontario Mathematics curriculum expectations. This resource both introduces students to what length is and has students practice measuring the length of concrete objects using non-standard units of measurement. This resource includes lessons, activities, and assessments that can be used to assess and aid in student understanding.

As a disclaimer, you will need to use additional materials that are not included in this resource such as non-standard units of measurement, everyday objects for students to measure, streamers, or strips of paper.

Through this unit, students work on meeting the following curriculum expectations:

  • E2.1: Identify measurable attributes of two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional objects, including length, area, mass, capacity, and angle
  • E2.2: Compare several everyday objects and order them according to length, area, mass, and capacity

Please note this is a printable resource. There is NO Google Slide component to this resource.

Overview of the Skills:

  • Every shape or object has several attributes that can be compared
  • The same shape or object can be described and compared using different attributes
  • There are particular words that describe commonly measured attributes:
  • Length is the distance from one point to the other and can be measured in any direction
  • Objects can be compared and ordered according to whether they have more or less of an attribute
  • Comparing the same objects by different attributes may produce different ordering

Lessons Included:

As with the other Wonderland Mathematics resources, this resource contains full-length lessons that you can utilize to help teach content. There are five lessons included:

  • Lesson 7.1: What is Length?
  • Lesson 7.2: Measuring Lengths (1)
  • Lesson 7.3: Measuring Lengths (2)
  • Lesson 7.4: Estimating Lengths
  • Lesson 7.5: Comparing Lengths

How the Resource is Divided:

This resource is made up of five sections.

Section 1: Unit and Lesson Overviews

This section will find the unit overview with the lesson title and focus of each lesson and how the Ontario Mathematics curriculum aligns with each lesson (specific expectations only).

Section 2: Lessons and Activities

This section makes up the bulk of the pages in the resource. Here you will find the lessons you need for the unit as well as the materials required for each lesson. Each lesson is followed by any additional materials such as activity pages, gameboards, whole-group instruction pieces that are needed to carry out the specific lesson.

Section 3: Additional Activities

This section is filled with additional practice activities and problems for students to solve. These activities are print and go, which means there is no prep needed (unless there are some cut and paste activities).

Section 4: Teacher Assessment Pieces

This section comprises assessment trackers you can use to see how students are progressing towards meeting the specific and overall expectations outlined in the math curriculum. These assessment trackers are intended to be used one-on-one.

Section 5: Answer Keys

This section contains answer keys for most of the activities found in the resource. Some activities do not have an answer key as there is no one right answer, or it is dependent on the number the student chooses to work with for the activity.

Breakdown of What is Included:

  • 12 activities
  • 5 content posters
  • 5 learning goal posters
  • 5 lessons
  • 4 math chats
  • 3 answer keys
  • 3 assessments
  • 1 checklist
  • 1 exit card

Frequently Asked Questions:

1. Can this resource be used online?

This resource is designed to be used in person. There are no digital components to this resource. If you have purchased this resource and would like to use it for online teaching, you have permission to do so.

2. Is this resource a stand-alone unit?

While I did intend for the Wonderland Mathematics series to be a stand-alone unit, it is nearly impossible to ensure this resource will meet the needs of all Ontario classrooms. As such, it is recommended that this unit be supplemented with additional activities or instruction not included in this resource if you see fit.

3. Is there a Bundle Available?

Please note that a bundle for this math series for Grade 1 is not yet available. The hope is to have all units completed by June 2022. Until these resources are ready to be bundled, you will be able to purchase this resource for 10% off the original price.
