In the Grade 10: Local & Global Foods
unit, students explore the availability of foods on a local and a global level. Students will also be asked to identify how food-purchasing choice and food-preparation practices affect the environment. The final part of this unit has students explore and learn about food security and what some local programs are that increase food security.
The overall expectations addressed in this packet are as follows:
- Demonstrate an understanding of where various foods are produced;
- Demonstrate an understanding of how various food-purchasing choices and food-preparation practices affect the environment;
- Demonstrate an understanding of issues related to food security.
The overall expectations for this unit are taken from the Grade 10 Food and Nutrition course. This is the fourth unit for the course and aligns with strand D of the curriculum expectations.

In this packet, you will find 2 rubrics that can be used to assess some of the key activities in this unit, along with 1 rubric that can be used to assess the individual reflections students complete. There are 5 reflections included in this packet that address a variety of concepts presented in this unit.
There are some activities in this packet that contain rubrics. These activities are not necessarily considered formal assignments, but they can be used as such. There are also 5 self-assessments and 3 exit cards that can be used at the end of each given lesson to assess student understanding of the key concepts.
Please note that there are no formal answer keys presented in this packet as many of the activities and questions presented in this packet are open-ended.
