In the Grade 12: Eating Patterns and Trends
unit, students look at how nutrition patterns change throughout the lifespan, and how influences on food choices and eating patterns are shaped by factors throughout the lifespan. Students are also asked to explore the relationship between nutrition and disease. The final portion of this unit has students explore trends and patterns in food and nutrition.
The overall expectations addressed in this packet are as follows:
- Demonstrate an understanding of food and nutrition-related issues at different stages in the lifespan;
- Demonstrate an understanding of the relationships between nutrition, health, and disease;
- Demonstrate an understanding of current Canadian trends and patterns in nutritional guidelines and in food production and consumption;
The overall expectations for this unit are taken from the Grade 12 Nutrition and Health course. This is the third unit for the course and aligns with strand C of the curriculum expectations.
What lessons are included in this packet?
This packet is thorough in the sense that it includes 15 in-depth lessons that help to cover the specific and overall expectations. What assessments are included in this packet?
In this packet, you will find 6 rubrics that can be used to assess some of the key activities in this unit, along with 1 rubric that can be used to assess the individual reflections students complete. There are 6 reflections included in this packet that address a variety of concepts presented in this unit. There are 3 food labs in this packet. The labs are as follows:

Food Lab #2: Planning Food Items to Meet Nutritional Needs of Diseases & Illnesses
Food Lab #3: Planning with Functional Foods
There are some activities in this packet that contain rubrics. These activities are not necessarily considered formal assignments, but they can be used as such. There are also 3 self-assessments and 4 exit cards that can be used at the end of each given lesson to assess student understanding of the key concepts.
Please note that there are no formal answer keys presented in this packet as many of the activities and questions presented in this packet are open-ended.
