In the Grade 12: Local and Global Foods
unit, students learn about what food security is and what the components of food security are. Students also consider the factors that contribute to nutritional inequalities among people within the same community. The second portion of this unit has students focus on food production and supply. Students will consider and explain how geographical factors affect food supply and production along with water potability. Students also consider the relationship between economic, social, and political factors and food supply and production. The final portion of the unit has students explain how consumer food choices affect the environment as well as the impact that agricultural trends and food production technologies have on the environment.
The overall expectations addressed in this packet are as follows:
- Demonstrate an understanding of various factors involved in achieving and maintaining food security;
- Demonstrate an understanding of various factors that affect food production and supply;
- Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of food production on the environment;
The overall expectations for this unit are taken from the Grade 12 Nutrition and Health course. This is the third unit for the course and aligns with strand D of the curriculum expectations.
