Product Description
The Grade 12: Understanding Physical Development activity packet is designed to meet the specific expectations outlined in the 2013 Ontario Social Sciences and Humanities curriculum. This packet is aligned with the HHG4M: Human Development throughout the Lifespan course. With this unit, students explore some of the theories of physical development and the major changes in the body throughout the lifespan. Students also explore the human brain physiology, including the key structures of the brain and their functions. Students also explore the development of the brain from the prenatal period to the elder years. Students also explore the major milestones in sensory and motor skills development in the early years of life.

The overall expectations that this packet addresses are:
-Demonstrate an understanding of physical development, including brain physiology and development, throughout the lifespan;
- Demonstrate an understanding of sensory and motor development at different stages of the lifespan;
- Demonstrate an understanding an understanding of contextual factors that can affect physical development, particularly brain development, throughout the lifespan and of the effects of these factors.

What lessons are included in this unit?
This unit includes 11 in-depth lessons. Some lessons have students explore how the brain develops throughout the lifespan, and factors that influence development both during the early years, and throughout the lifespan. The lessons included in this topic are as follows:

Lesson 2.3: The Brain
Lesson 2.4: The Brain and the Lifespan
Lesson 2.5: Motor Skills and Reflexes
Lesson 2.6: Sensory Faculties and Motor Skills
Lesson 2.7: Factors and Development
Lesson 2.8: Environmental Stimulation and Deprivation
Lesson 2.9: The Prenatal Period
Lesson 2.10: Brain Plasticity
Lesson 2.11: Showing Our Learning

This packet includes 14 readings, and 40 activities. There are also inquiry organizers that students can use to organize their findings to their wonderings.

What assessments are included in this packet?
This packet includes 3 assignments. The assignments included are:
Assignment 2.1: Understanding the Brain
Assignment 2.2: Understanding Physical Development Knowledge Share
Assignment 2.3: Understanding Physical Development Reflection Journal

This packet also includes 6 rubrics, 4 exit cards, 5 reflections, and 2 self-assessments. These methods of assessment can be used to identify whether or not students have met the lesson learning goal and specific expectations for this packet.

Please note that there are no formal answer keys presented in this packet as many of the activities and questions presented in this packet are open-ended. There is no quiz or test presented in this packet. Students demonstrate their understanding in other ways.
