activity is adaptable, according to your curriculum and the needs of your students in 2nd grade
. The kids have so much fun playing this educational game that they don't even know they are learning!
Create dozens of versions of Bingo by combining the 150 Closed Syllable Cards and 3 Bingo Mats in various ways.
In most bingo games, words are already printed on the mats, so students only have to read the words when they play. But in this activity, students must read and write
, so learning is reinforced
. Students practice both decoding (sounding out) and encoding (spelling) phonetic words and word parts.
There are two main parts to the game:
1. Students create their own Bingo Mats by writing words or syllables in each square.
2. Students play the game by taking turns reading the randomly-drawn Closed Syllable Cards, and marking the words on their individual mats.
This reading and spelling game provides wonderful opportunities to review:
-the terms letter, word, vowel, consonant
-the short vowel sounds
-what a syllable
-2-letter blends and consonant digraphs
-3-letter consonant combinations
Closed syllables are one of the first types of syllable that students learn about.
In this kit you will get:
-3 Student Bingo Mats (3 X 3, 4 X 4, 5 X 5)
-10 Pages of Open Syllable Cards (150 cards in total)
The words have been carefully chosen with attention to balancing vowels, consonants, and consonant combinations.
The duration of the game will vary between about 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the materials you use. The activity is appropriate for a small or large group.
