This is another enrichment project I created to help push my higher level math thinkers in grade 2 to the next level of real-world math application. Though I used it for grade 2, it could easily be used for grades 3 and 4 as well.
In this project, students are given the task to measure the wingspan of several made-up butterfly species for the Beautiful Butterfly Observatory in both inches and centimeters and record their data in a table. After recording, students will use the data to create a line plot using inches, and a bar graph for their centimeters information.
The product includes space for students to show their work, as well as questions for students to answer about the information they collected, calculated and completed. A teacher rubric is included to assess student work. A student reflection rubric and survey are also included to give you feedback about your students' experience with the project. This can be used as a classroom enrichment project, small group project, or even homework based on your students.
Skills assessed include:
-precise measurement in inches and centimeters
-comparison of two measurements taken of the same object
-solving multiple step word problems
-adding two-digit numbers within 100
-adding multiple two-digit numbers
-line plot creation
-bar graph interpretation/analysis
