This cross-curricular lesson compares two texts that have similar, inspiring protagonists: "The Tree Lady: The True Story of How One Tree-Loving Woman Changed a City Forever" by H. Joseph Hopkins and "Wangari Maathai: The Woman Who Planted a Million Trees" by Franck Prévot. Students will learn about reading informational texts and comparing two texts. As a tie-in to science, the lesson discusses environmental issues including ecosystems and the importance of trees in our environment. Components include related readings, pre- and post-assessment, and differentiated versions of individual activities, and group projects, including digital content.
