Essential Questions: How do you know whether or not to add or subtract to solve a world problem?
Overview: Students often fear word problems. They find them difficult and often avoid even reading the question. They assume that since today is “Addition” day, they will just have to add to get all the answers. And this often is true. That is why I never just give word problems on the “Topic of the Day.” I create word problem sort. I make the kids read through problems I have cut up and search for the problems they need to solve using the skills we learned in class. This is a short activity that could be completed in a second grade classroom. Below explains the pages of the document:
Page 1: Word Problem Sort
Cut out the boxes. Have students work in partners, individually or in groups to sort the word problems into two groups based on the necessary operations to solve the problems. Have students find key words that helped them decide which operation to use.
Page 2: Word Problem Organizer
This is just a paper kids can use to sort their word problems.
Pages 3-4: Practice Worksheet
Students can then complete the worksheet using the operations they decided on. The word problems are the same ones as were in the sort
