I created a differentiated writing rubric for both the classroom teacher and students with disabilities. You can print it out double-sided to save paper. This rubric aligns to NYC DOE's Grade 2 Social Studies Scope and Sequence Unit 3 for the topic: Urban, Rural, and Suburban Communities. The writing assignment for this rubric would be to compare and contrast urban and rural communities (or you can use suburban as well). A score of 0-2 is used for scoring, as the standard criteria for second grade is 0-4. Have the student go through and check off the rubric with you as you grade it together: this gives the student ownership of his/her work. I used this for my students, and every student was able to understand and explain his or her score.
