The activities in this packet are aligned with the Ontario Grade 2 Math curriculum expectations. You might choose to use these activities with soaring Grade 2 students, or students in Grade 3 who might need review about what patterns are and extending repeating patterns as well as growing and shrinking patterns. This activity packet has everything you will need to teach patterning at the Grade 2 level.
This activity packet is divided into 4 sections:
Section 1: Lessons & Activities
Section 1 contains the lessons and relevant activities that go along with each lesson. This packet contains 11 lessons along with a pre-assessment lesson. This packet also contains 2 tests/assessment. The first assessment can be done with students prior to the patterning unit. The second assessment can be done with students after commencing the patterning unit. Manipulatives are encouraged for this section, but the focus is on growing and shrinking patterns.
Section 2: Additional Activities
This section contains additional activities that can be done if students are finished their work early, or if students need some additional practice with growing, shrinking and repeating patterns.
Section 3: Pattern Strips
This section contains pattern block strips that can be used to help students practice extending geometric patterns or that can be used to describe geometric patterns in terms of pattern rules and pattern sequences.
Section 4: Answer Keys
This section contains answer keys for all relevant activity worksheet. For the parts where students are asked to create their own patterns there is no answer as this part is open for student interpretation/creation.
Key vocabulary terms are reviewed with students during lesson introduction activities. Each term is defined for your reference as well. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me! Please take a look at the preview to see what activities are included.
