The “Grade 2 Subtraction” activity packet is aligned with the Ontario Grade 2 Mathematics curriculum specific expectations. The specific expectations this packet addresses are as follows:
- Describe relationships between quantities by using whole-number subtraction;
- Solve problems involving the subtraction of whole numbers to 18, using a variety of mental strategies.
- Solve problems involving the subtraction of two-digit numbers with and without regrouping;
This packet has students review mental math strategies for subtraction within 18 and it also introduces students to two-digit subtraction with and without borrowing. This packet is divided into 5 sections which are as follows:
Section 1: Lessons and Activities
This section contains 6 lessons that address the above expectations. Following each lesson are several worksheets that have students practice the key skill/lesson learning goal. The activities included in this packet also have an answer key that follows so students can self-check their answers, or the teacher can check student work with ease.
Section 2: Additional Activities
This section contains additional activity worksheets that help to address the above expectations in addition to the worksheets presented in section 1. This section includes activities such as “Spin and Subtract” where students spin a spinner and subtract the two numbers that have been spun.
Section 3: Daily Subtraction Pages
This section contains 8 half-sheet pages that have students practice key subtraction strategies and address the above expectations.
Section 4: Math Centres
This section contains a math centre called “Subtraction Stars,” which are subtraction equations written on cards (letters A – X). Students solve each of the subtraction equations and record their responses on the recording sheet provided.
Section 5: Answer Keys
This section contains all answer keys for the above activities included in each section.
This packet is not intended to be a full stand-alone unit, rather it is intended to be supplemental material to be used in conjunction with resources you might already have. If you have any questions about this packet, please feel free to let me know. I would be more than happy to answer any questions you might have.
