In the Grade 2: Air and Water in the Environment unit, students explore how and why air and water are major parts of the environment and are also essential materials for life. Students also learn about the characteristics of air and the various forms of water in the environment. Students also learn about the changes in and interactions between air and water when they are heated and cooled. Students also learn about how air and water move throughout the environment. The final portion of this
This activity packet provides you with lessons, activities, experiments, readings and rubrics that can be used to address the following Grade 2 Science overall expectations:
- Assess ways in which the actions of humans have an impact on the quality of air and water, and ways in which the quality of air and water has an impact on living things;
- Investigate the characteristics of air and water and the visible/invisible effects of and changes to air and/or water in the environment;
- Demonstrate an understanding of the ways in which air and water are used by living things to help them meet their basic needs;
This packet also addresses the following big ideas:
- Air and water are a major part of the environment.
- Living things need air and water to survive.
- Changes to air and water affect living things and the environment.
- Our actions affect the quality of air and water, and its ability to sustain life.
What lessons are included in this packet?
This packet is thorough in the sense that it includes 16 in-depth lessons that help to cover the specific and overall expectations as well as the big ideas. Some lessons are designed to set the stage for students in terms of content knowledge and terminology, and other lessons are designed to have students further investigate characteristics of air and water. The lessons included in this packet are:
Lesson 4.1: Introducing the Unit
Lesson 4.2: Exploring Air
Lesson 4.3: Air Experiments
Lesson 4.4: Exploring Water
Lesson 4.5: Water Experiments

There are 26 activity worksheets, 5 readings, 6 self-reflection cards, and 6 rubrics. There are 2 assignments presented in this unit. These assignments are:
Assignment 4.1: Air and Water Quality Poster
Assignment 4.2: Air and Water in the Environment Reflection Journal
What assessments are included?
There are 9 rubrics to assess student understanding of the concepts addressed in this unit. There are also 6 exit cards presented in this packet that can be used at the end of a lesson to identify what students have learned about the concepts addressed in this unit.
