This activity packet provides you with lessons, activities, experiments, readings and rubrics that can be used to address the following Grade 2 Science overall expectations:

- Assess ways in which the actions of humans have an impact on the quality of air and water, and ways in which the quality of air and water has an impact on living things;

- Investigate the characteristics of air and water and the visible/invisible effects of and changes to air and/or water in the environment;

- Demonstrate an understanding of the ways in which air and water are used by living things to help them meet their basic needs;

This packet also addresses the following big ideas:

- Air and water are a major part of the environment.

- Living things need air and water to survive.

- Changes to air and water affect living things and the environment.

- Our actions affect the quality of air and water, and its ability to sustain life.

What lessons are included in this packet?

This packet is thorough in the sense that it includes 16 in-depth lessons that help to cover the specific and overall expectations as well as the big ideas. Some lessons are designed to set the stage for students in terms of content knowledge and terminology, and other lessons are designed to have students further investigate characteristics of air and water. The lessons included in this packet are:

There are 26 activity worksheets, 5 readings, 6 self-reflection cards, and 6 rubrics. There are 2 assignments presented in this unit. These assignments are:

What assessments are included?

There are 9 rubrics to assess student understanding of the concepts addressed in this unit. There are also 6 exit cards presented in this packet that can be used at the end of a lesson to identify what students have learned about the concepts addressed in this unit. Please note that there are not provided in this packet, as many activities involve an open answer and it is up to you to determine whether students have appropriately demonstrated their knowledge. There is one quiz midway through the unit. There is no final test as students had previously demonstrated their understanding of the unit concepts in a variety of other ways.
