One of the MAJOR CONTENT standards for third graders is to understand PROPERTIES of multiplication and the relationship between multiplication and division. Students must be able to apply properties of operations as strategies to multiply and divide. For example, knowing that 8 × 5 = 40 and 8 × 2 = 16, one can find 8 × 7 as 8 × (5 + 2) = (8 × 5) + (8 × 2) = 40 + 16 = 56. (Distributive property.) In this activity, students must use the DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY to find the three pieces that have the same value, match them together, then record their answers on the Recording Sheet.
Directions to the Teacher: Print, laminate, and cut out pieces for students to match together. Make copies of the Recording Sheet (2 pages).
