This is a difficult concept for students who have just completed second grade and entered third grade. This packet drills down to the essential concepts of heredity without the complications of genetic mechanisms or human examples as written into the standard itself. Explanations of parent/offspring, inherited/acquired traits and effects of the environment on organisms are explored. Three classroom activities are included: 1. Analyzing traits to match parent to offspring, 2.Classifying inherited and acquired traits, 3.Testing the effects of light on plant growth. All presentations deal with plants and animals as defined in the assessment notes of NGSS for grade 3.
