Dr. Dea's Common Core Third Grade Writing Rubric provides tools for teachers and students. Because many teachers asked for both a three-point and a four-point rubric, Dr. Dea has designed one of each and included both in this packet. Also in this packet are two student-friendly rubrics: one a simple checklist of Common Core expectations and the second delineated by PARCC's assessed criteria (see below).
Aligned to the Common Core Writing Standards and PARCC's most recent scale score updates (Summer 2015), Dr. Dea's rubric is a framework for evaluating analytic (argument & informative) and narrative writing. The student friendly checklists are tools to use throughout the writing process; teachers can choose to emphasize various aspects on the checklists as targets for instruction.
Dr. Dea's rubric delineates Common Core descriptors among five criteria categories: Reading Comprehension, Writing Development, Writing Organization, Clarity of Language, and Language Conventions. Additionally, Dr. Dea's teacher rubric embeds Common Core grade-level language standards specifying grammar and conventions expectations to ensure teachers remember to include instruction and evaluation of grade-level conventions.
