The Grade 3, Unit 15: Financial Literacy resource is designed to introduce students to estimating and calculating the change required for various simple cash transactions. This resource features 7 lessons that are based on the 2020 Ontario Mathematics curriculum. Each lesson features an activity and an assessment that can be used to gauge student understanding.
Through this unit, students work on meeting the following curriculum expectations:
- F1.1: Estimate and calculate the change required for various simple cash transactions involving whole-dollar amounts and amounts of less than one dollar.
Please note that the images in this resource are not realistic due to copyright reasons. The images are clipart. The sizes of the coins vary between the activity pages and the demonstration images. The demonstration images (e.g., discussion posters or coin posters) are not to actual size for the coins so that students can see the coins from a distance.
Please note this is a printable resource. There is NO Google Slide component to this resource.
Overview of the Skills:
The first lesson of this lesson reviews the coins and bills students have learned about and how to represent money amounts in Grade 2. A pre-assessment is included in this resource to review what students have learned from Grade 2. Students develop the following understanding:
- Identify situations involving simple cash transactions
- Estimate cash payments (i.e., for change, payment is rounded to the closest five cents)
- Calculate change for a cash transaction involving dollars
- Calculate change for a cash transaction involving cents
Students do not work with transactions involving dollars and cents. This is because students do not learn about decimal operations until Grade 5. Rather the transactions in this packet are either cents up to 100 or whole-dollar amounts.
As with the other Wonderland Mathematics resources, this resource contains full-length lessons that you can utilize to help teach content. There are seven lessons included:
- Lesson 15.1: Represent and Count
- Lesson 15.2: Rounding Change
- Lesson 15.3: Making Change
- Lesson 15.4: Making Change
- Lesson 15.5: Change: Within $10.00
- Lesson 15.6: Change: Above $10.00
- Lesson 15.7: Let's Review
How the Resource is Divided:
This resource is made up of five sections.
Section 1: Unit and Lesson Overviews
This section will find the unit overview with the lesson title and focus of each lesson and how the Ontario Mathematics curriculum aligns with each lesson (specific expectations only).
Section 2: Lessons and Activities
This section makes up the bulk of the pages in the resource. Here you will find the lessons you need for the unit as well as the materials required for each lesson. Each lesson is followed by any additional materials such as activity pages, gameboards, whole-group instruction pieces that are needed to carry out the specific lesson.
Section 3: Additional Activities
This section is filled with additional practice activities and problems for students to solve. These activities are print and go, which means there is no prep needed (unless there are some cut and paste activities).
Section 4: Teacher Assessment Pieces
This section comprises assessment trackers you can use to see how students are progressing towards meeting the specific and overall expectations outlined in the math curriculum. These assessment trackers are intended to be used one-on-one.
Section 5: Answer Keys
This section contains answer keys for most of the activities found in the resource. Some activities do not have an answer key as there is no one right answer, or it is dependent on the number the student chooses to work with for the activity.

Frequently Asked Questions:
1. Can this resource be used online?
This resource is designed to be used in person. There are no digital components to this resource. If you have purchased this resource and would like to use it for online teaching, you have permission to do so.
2. Is this resource a stand-alone unit?
While I did intend for the Wonderland Mathematics series to be a stand-alone unit, it is nearly impossible to ensure this resource will meet the needs of all Ontario classrooms. As such, it is recommended that this unit be supplemented with additional activities or instruction not included in this resource if you see fit.
3. Is there a Bundle Available?
Please note that a bundle for this math series for Grade 3 is not yet available. The hope is to have all units completed by June 2022. Until these resources are ready to be bundled, you will be able to purchase this resource for 10% off the original price.
