PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This is a compressed file which contains a unit based on the lessons from "Teaching Planning in Peel", which is a free resource. It addresses the Grade 3 Social Studies expectations on urban and rural communities. The unit includes 9 lessons: Introduction, Defining Urban and Rural, Neighbourhood Walk, Land Use, Transportation, Natural Environment, Population, City Kid Country Kid, and a culminating task - My Urban/Rural Home. It includes worksheets, graphic organizers, maps, links and resources. Two books are used in this unit: The Little House by Virginia Lee Burton and City Kid, Country Kid by Julie Cummins. I have included a sample letter to send home about the neighbourhood walk, as well as a small research project about urban and rural communities in Canada.

This unit is a generic as I could reasonably make it. I teach in Thames Valley and have created a copy of this unit specifically for our region, including maps of Middlesex County and London. These are not included in this file.
