This task focuses on the mastery of the 4th grade Common Core Math Standards for Number and Operations-Fractions. In particular (4.NF3a) and (4.NF3b). It is a supplement to the EngageNY Grade 4-Module 5-Topic A - Lessons 1 and 2. Students have to decompose fractions as sums of unit fractions with the same denominator in more than one way. They will have to draw and label tape diagrams (a visual model) to justify their decompositions. They must understand addition and subtraction of fractions as joining and separating parts referring to the same whole.
Examples: 3/8 = 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8; 3/8 = 1/8 + 2/8; 2 1/8 = 1 + 1 + 1/8 = 8/8 + 8/8 + 1/8.
This product includes a detailed color-coded teacher answer key and rubric to accompany the student task document. The student task consist of eight problems that address the 4.NF3a/4.NF3b grade 4 Common Core Math Standards. Each problem consist of a non-unit fraction with an addition sentence decomposition. Each problem requires the student to draw and label a tape diagram for a given fraction & its decomposition. Once the tape diagram has been label, students must shaded in the tape diagram so that it represents the given fraction.
