Here you will find over 50 open-ended math tasks, each of which can be used for a 10-30 minute student- centered mini-lesson. These tasks “anchor” your lesson, bridging new learning to prior knowledge. After you do a bit of review or a warm-up, begin your lesson with one of these problems. These problems should be presented before textbooks are opened to draw students into the learning environment. These collaborative problem solving tasks challenge advanced learners while providing access to learners at all levels. After 10-15 minutes, bring students back together to share and discuss three of four solutions or strategies. Anchor tasks are usually followed by guided practice and then independent practice.
