In today’s classrooms, providing differentiated instruction is a must. The level of accountability for teachers, schools, and school divisions is greater than ever and we must find a way to reach each and every student in our classroom. This document contains a variety of differentiated tasks for the following NCTM strands of mathematics: Number and Operations; Geometry; Measurement; Data Analysis and Probability; and Algebra. Common Core standards that are addressed include: 5NF.1; 5G.3; 5G.4; 5MD.3; 5MD.4; 5MD.5; 5MD.2; 5OA.1.
Prior to each task, a short pre-assessment is given to help teachers determine which readiness group students will fall in. A short description for each readiness group is below.
Not Quite Ready Students – These students will struggle with the skills and concepts presented in the pre-assessment and will need support in learning those concepts. In most cases, the not quite ready task requires direct instruction from the teacher.
Just Ready Students – These students have knowledge of some of the skills and concepts in the pre-assessment but will benefit from additional practice in order to achieve mastery. In most cases, the just ready task can be completed working with a partner but the teacher will need to check in to ensure the students are progressing and answer any questions they may have.
Ready to Go Students – These students have demonstrated mastery of the skills and concepts in the pre-assessment. They will benefit from having an opportunity to explore those skills and concepts at a much deeper level. These students will require limited support from the teacher.
