The “Forces Acting on Structures and Mechanisms” activity packet is based on the overall and specific expectations outlined in the Ontario Science curriculum document for the Grade 5 level and the Understanding Structures and Mechanisms strand.
The big ideas for this unit are based on the big ideas presented in the Ontario Science curriculum. These ideas are as follows:
- Structures and mechanisms throughout our environment have forces that act on and within them;
- We can measure forces in order to determine how they affect structures and mechanisms. This information can be used to guide the design of new structures and mechanisms;
- Forces that result from natural phenomena have an effect on society and the environment;
