This is a Grade 5 computation test (untimed) that can be used as a placement test to gauge at which "level" students are in terms of multiplication and division. The test becomes more challenging as it goes on.
The skills go in this order:
Page 1: basic multiplication facts
Page 2: 2x1, 2x2, and 3x1 digit multiplication
Page 3: 3x2 and 3x3 digit multiplication
Page 4: basic division facts
Page 5: 3 by 1 and 3 by 2 digit division
Page 6: 4 by 2 digit division
Page 7: fraction computation (all operations)
This placement test can be administered in one or multiple sessions, depending on your students (make a judgment call!). Some students will struggle after the first page, so I make it very clear to the students that they should try their best but it is OK if they are completely stuck. I say to leave it blank if it is beginning to stress them out. This clearly means they do not know the skill, and will inform you as to what their instruction should look like.
My team used this test to determine our leveled math intervention groups. We sorted students based on their test performance and where their breakdown was, and our instruction in that intervention group was therefore determined. Students are then given the test again in the middle and at the end of the year to measure growth!
