Product Description

This is a six problem math windowpane that is appropriate for most beginning fifth graders. I use this as part of my weekly math menu. Problems are written with 'parallel tasks'. Parallel tasks allow students to self-select the appropriate level of difficulty for themselves. Basically, a word problem is given with blanks for the numbers. Below the problem, students can choose which set of numbers to use for the blanks. This allows students of differing abilities to access the same set of problems. Generally, I ask my students to circle 'a', 'b' or 'c' for each problems, so I know which problem they have chosen to solve. I have found parallel tasks to be a very effective way to differentiate in math, and I have found that my students generally choose their levels wisely.
