The “Grade 5: Personal Safety and Injury Prevention” activity packet. This activity packet is designed to meet the expectations outlined in the Ontario 2015 Revised Health and Physical Education curriculum document. The specific expectations that this activity packet addresses are as follows:
C1.1: Identify people and supportive services that can assist with injury prevention, emergencies, bullying and abusive and violent situations;
C2.2: Demonstrate the ability to deal with threatening situations by applying appropriate living skills and safety strategies;
C3.2: Explain how a person’s actions, either in person or online, can affect their own and others’ feelings, self-concept, emotional well-being, and reputation;
This packet introduces students to conflict resolution strategies and explores the benefit of using these conflict resolution strategies whenever possible. Students discuss the impact that bullying and negative actions such as name calling can have on an individuals’ feelings and emotional well-being. It is beneficial for students to understand that when discussing personal safety and injury prevention, it is important to develop and foster a safe environment where they can talk about issues that they might be facing or people that they know are facing and learn strategies to help them deal with these situations.
This packet includes lessons, activity worksheets, small group activities and whole group activities that help to address the above mentioned specific expectations for the Personal Safety and Injury Prevention topic of the Ontario Health curriculum.
