This is a handy sheet I created to keep track of my students' progress along the continuum for scientific inquiry/experimentation skills outlined in the Ontario Ministry of Education curriculum document for Science.
This rubric/chart allows the teacher to track each student's development along the road to mastery of the following specific skills:
*initiating and planning
(e.g., asking questions, clarifying problems, planning procedures)
*performing and recording
(e.g., following procedures, accessing information, recording observations and findings)
*analysing and interpreting
(e.g., organizing data, reflecting on the effectiveness of actions performed, drawing conclusions)
(e.g., using appropriate vocabulary, communicating findings in a variety of ways)
The hope is to provide teachers with a way of looking at what students can do so that they can plan for further development of their students’ skills as the year progresses.
Teachers can choose to use the space in the chart to write short anecdotal comments for each student or to rank them along the continuum:
Beginning --> Exploring --> Emerging --> Competent --> Proficient
**This chart is customized to the Ontario Curriculum for Grade 5 Science & Technology. It includes the units: Human Organ Systems, Forces Acting on Structures & Mechanisms, Properties of and Changes in Matter, and Conservation of Energy & Resources**
