The “Substance Use and Addictions” activity packet is designed to meet the curriculum expectations for the 2015 Ontario Grade 5 Health curriculum. This packet has students:
- Describe the short- and long-term effects of alcohol use, and identify factors that can affect intoxication;
- Demonstrate the ability to apply decision-making, assertiveness, and refusal skills to deal with pressures pertaining to alcohol use or other behaviours that could later lead to addiction;
- Identify personal and social factors that can affect a person’s decision to drink alcohol at different points in his or her life.
This packet includes lesson plans and worksheets as well as readings that help students to understand what alcohol is, how it is used and what the short-term and long-term effects of alcohol use and abuse are. This packet is designed to provide students with information about alcohol and give them the tools that they need in order to make a healthy and informed decision.
