The “Role of Government & Responsible Citizenship” activity packet is aligned with the Grade 5 Ontario Social Studies curriculum expectations. This activity packet is aligned with the 2013 Social Studies curriculum.
This activity packet is divided into 5 sections. The five sections are as follows.
Section 1: Lessons, Activities & Readings
This section is the largest of the 5 sections. This section contains 15 lessons and relevant activities and research activities that go along with each lesson. The topics that the lessons address includes: what responsibilities are, what roles are, what a democracy is, what the three levels of government are and the responsibilities of the three levels of government, what the Charter of Rights and Freedoms is, how bills are passed, what by-laws are, what an election is and what political parties are. There are readings and prompting questions to support all concepts discussed in this packet. There is also a final assignment and a debate included.
Section 2: Additional Activities and Readings
This section contains additional readings and activities that can be used to supplement the lessons found in section 2, or that can be used as extension activities. This section contains two research activities, one where students research a member of the House of Commons and one where students research a past Prime Minister.
Section 3: Journal Prompts & Think Time Questions
This section contains exit cards, think-time questions and journal prompts that get students thinking about what the role of the government is and what responsible citizenship is. The prompts and questions included in this section can be used as a reflection activity, or can serve as a time-filler at the end of a lesson or before a lesson to have students reflect on what they have learned.
Section 4: Inquiry Research Templates
This section contains graphic organizers and templates that can be used for inquiry questions or research activities. The templates are generic (meaning they are not geared towards one topic for this unit) so they are flexible and can be used with any lesson or any of the research activities included in this packet.
Section 5: Answer Keys
This section contains the applicable answer keys. Many of the activities in this packet allow for open ended responses in order for students to critically think about the various topics presented in this lesson. As a result, many of the activities in this packet do not contain an answer key.
Please take a look at the preview of this packet. This packet is designed to supplement your instruction on the role of government and responsible citizenship so you might find that you need to modify the lessons. All lessons include an introduction activity, a core learning activity and a lesson consolidation piece/activity.
