The Grade 5, Unit 1: First Nations and Europeans in New France and Early Canada
is aligned with the Ontario Social Studies curriculum. With this unit, students learn about key characteristics of various First Nations and European settler communities in New France up until 1713. Students are asked to explore both primary and secondary sources in this unit. Students also investigate relationships and interactions among these communities from a variety of perspectives and will develop their understanding of how historical events in early Canada have had an impact on present-day Canada.
The overall expectations addressed in this packet are:
- A1. Analyze some key short- and long-term consequences of interactions among Indigenous peoples, among Europeans, and between Indigenous and European people prior to 1713 in what would eventually become Canada.
- A2. Use the social studies inquiry process to investigate aspects of the interactions among Indigenous peoples, among Europeans, and between Indigenous and European people prior to 1713 in what would eventually become Canada, from the perspectives of the various groups involved.
- A3. Describe significant features of and interactions among Indigenous peoples, among Europeans, and between Indigenous and European people prior to 1713 in what would eventually become Canada.
The big ideas addressed in this packet are:
- Interactions between people have consequences that can be positive for some people and negative for others.
- When studying interrelationships between groups of people, it is important to be aware that each group has its own perspective on those interrelationships.
- Cooperation and conflict are inherent aspects of human interaction/relationships.

This packet includes 52 activities, 13 readings and 7 rubrics. Students are also given the chance to reflect on the information they gain through their research and learning activities about First Nations and the impact that Europeans had on the lives and well-being of First Nations.
