This product was designed as a culminating task for a health unit on nutrients, nutrition facts and healthy food choices. I mention grade 5 and grade 8 specifically because this assignment aligns with expectations in the Ontario Health and Physical Education curriculum for these grades.
You can use this assignment to assess what students have learned about nutrients and using nutrition facts to make healthy choices. I have included a rubric I used to assess this assignment when it was completed by grade 5 students. This assignment also addresses some expectations in the Media Literacy curriculum so you could edit the rubric to assess those expectations as well.
You can let students look up the nutrient facts on their own if they have access to computers or you can print them and distribute them in class. Nutrition information can be found on most fast food restaurant websites.
