This file includes a Grade 6 French Social Studies project about First Nations (Les Premières Nations/Les autochtones) and the Canadian Government. The project integrates French Language, Social Studies and Visual Arts. This is a great project if you are studying First Nations and the Canadian government's perspective about First Nations.
The project is divided into three parts:
1) The first part focuses on the history of Canada and First Nations.
2) The second part focuses on the reserves in Canada. One of the tasks asks students to write a journal entry from the point of view of a First Nation living on a reserve. Another task involves creating a three-dimensional diorama of a reserve.
3) The third part of the assignment focuses on the relationship between the Canadian government and First Nations. Here, students will have the opportunity to write a letter to the government to express their concerns about some First Nations groups living in areas that have high exposure rates to pollutants.
Students can also use this handout as a rough draft if you wish for them to present a formal project on a bristol board or through another form of media presentation. They can use the handout to jot down notes they get from their research.
The file is editable so you can add or remove anything to make sure the project meets your students' needs and the learning goals you are working on in class. The file is 7 pages long. It is a lengthy project and will surely take a good month to complete. Who doesn't love a long project? ;)
