A fun ready-to-use project that I do with my grade 6 MFI students virtually every year. In this project students learn that trade is an important activity between two countries and the world community. Therefore, a healthy global economy involves trade (exchanging resources) and working together with others.
During the course of this project, students work in groups of 2-3 and they get to pick one of our top trading partners (a list is provided in the package). They then have the opportunity research the country of their choice and to re-connect this information back to Canada. Guiding questions are provided to help students further refine their research. A checklist and a rubric is also provided in the package, as well as a brief introduction on trade. Expectations are clear, and students know what to do.
By the end of this project, students have a better awareness of the global economy and better overall geographical/cultural awareness of other countries. In a grade 5/6 split class, I normally run this particular project at the same time that the grade 5's are doing government as I find this complements the expectations for the two grades quite nicely.
