The “Substance Use and Addictions” activity packet is designed to meet the curriculum expectations for the 2015 Ontario Grade 6 Health curriculum. This packet has students:
Describe the range of effects associated with using cannabis and other illicit drugs and intoxicating substances.
Identify people and community resources that can provide support when dealing with choices or situations involving substance use and addictive behaviours;
Use decision-making strategies and skills and an understanding of factors influencing drug use to make safe personal choices about the use of drugs such as alcohol, tobacco and cannabis.
This packet includes lesson plans and worksheets as well as readings that help students to understand what illicit drugs are, how they are used and what the short-term and long-term effects of some illicit drugs are. This packet is designed to provide students with information about drugs and give them the tools that they need in order to make a healthy and informed decision. Students research a chosen drug (e.g., cannabis, opioids, ecstasy) and identify the short- and long-term effects of the drug. Knowing these effects will help students to make personal choices about the use of drugs.
This packet is designed to supplement your unit on Substance Use, Addictions and Related Behaviours. If you have any questions, please feel free to let me know.
