The Grade 6 Canada’s Interactions with the Global Community unit, students are asked to explore the global community and the role that Canada plays in the global community. Students will investigate current social, political, economic, and environmental issues. Students will also develop their understanding of the importance of international action and cooperation. Students also explore the impact of natural disasters on Canada as well as the world.

Please note that this is not a full inquiry unit. Students are introduced to topics such as climate change, the Kyoto Protocol, Red Cross and so on. Students can use these readings to help them formulate questions that they would like to know the answers to.

The overall expectations that this packet addresses are:
- Explain the importance of international cooperation in addressing global issues, and evaluate the effectiveness of selected actions by Canada and Canadian citizens in the international arena.
- Use the social studies inquiry process to investigate some global issues of political, social, economic and/or environmental importance, their impact on the global community, and responses to the issues.
- Describe significant aspects of the involvement of Canada and Canadians in some regions around the world, including the impact of this involvement.

The big ideas that this packet addresses are:
- The actions of Canada and Canadians can make a difference in the world.
- Global issues require global action.
- Canada and Canadians participate in the world in many different ways.

With this reflection journal, students are asked to write about something they have learned or that they are wondering after each lesson or every other lesson. Students are asked to write their reflections in full sentences, and are asked to write meaningful entries that show inquiry and learning.

Please note that there are no formal answer keys presented in this packet as many of the activities and questions presented in this packet are open-ended. There is no quiz or test presented in this packet. Students demonstrate their understanding in other ways.
