This interactive Grade 7 English Language Arts Lesson integrates language arts and technology by asking students to create a multimedia presentation of a poem they create using Microsoft Photo Story 3 (user-friendly free software that allows user to combine photos, text, voice and music in a multimedia presentation that plays in Windows Media Player).
Following a read-aloud of Estelle Condra's See The Ocean, students create their own poems using a form I call sensory perception poetry (describing a subject drawing upon descriptors from all five senses - smell, hearing, taste, sight, touch). Students then use the computer to create Photo Stories of their poems.
The lesson plan includes outcomes and objectives covered and describes, step-by-step, in great detail, all components of the lesson. I have included a Performance Task Checklist and a Story Map.
The lesson plan includes two sample poems, a sample Photo Story of a poem (to show an end product of what is expected from students), a sensory perception poem template (2 versions) and a sensory perception poem thought web.
This lesson is designed for grade 7, but can be taught at various grade levels, with slight modifications to fit other grades' outcomes.
