Looking for a way to assess your incoming Grade 7 students' mathematic knowledge gained from Grade 6? The "Grade 7: Ontario-Based Diagnostic Math Assessment Test" is a 25 paged assessment test that can be used at the beginning of the Grade 7 school year to identify what concepts from Grade 6 need to be reviewed in Grade 7. The questions on the assessment test are based on the Grade 6 Ontario Math specific expectations. Students are asked to complete questions from all strands in the math curriculum (i.e., Number Sense and Numeration, Measurement, Geometry and Spatial Sense, Patterning and Algebra, & Data Management and Probability). This packet includes an answer key as well as a comment table that divides each question into the expectation it targeted.
There are many ways you can choose to use this diagnostic assessment - it is flexible. You might choose to split up the assessment over several weeks, several days or throughout the school year and base it on questions that surround the unit of study you are teaching.
Q: How is the Ontario Diagnostic Math Assessment Test different than the Math Skills Review?
Great question. The Math Skills Review packet includes one activity worksheet for each expectation for Grade 6 Math. The Ontario Diagnostic Math Assessment Test includes one question for the majority of the expectations outlined in the curriculum, but most of the expectations are addressed on 25 pages. The Diagnostic Math Assessment is designed to be used at the beginning of the year, but the Math Skills Review is designed to be used throughout the year or at the end of the year.
Q: What additional materials should be used for this test?
Many of the expectations addressed require students to use concrete materials. As a result, making these materials available to students (manipulatives) for them to use during the test would be beneficial. If students choose to use manipulatives, you can also comment on how students are using the manipulatives and what their choice of manipulatives are.
Please note that not all expectations are covered in this assessment, but the major expectations are (e.g., for data management students are only required to create ONE graph, rather than a bunch of different graphs). This is to make the assessment quick and easy to use.
