The Grade 7 Ontario Spiral Math Review
packet is aligned with the Mathematics expectations outlined in the Ontario Mathematics curriculum. Please note that other than the introduction and title page, there is no indication of the grade level on each of the review pages. This is so you can use the review sheets with other grade levels and students who might need modifications to their learning expectations.
Why Spiral Review?
A spiral review has students review math skills that they have learned throughout each unit during the year. This is compared to having students only review concepts as the unit is progressing, and then not again until the end of the year. When we spiral mathematic concepts, students are more likely to retain the concepts they have learned, and apply the concepts to various mathematics problems they encounter.
Do I Have to Go Week by Week?
The purpose of each “week number” is to order the given units and review them in the order that they are most likely to be completed in. The skills from one unit builds on the skills in a different unit. If you complete the units in a different order you are more than welcome to change the order of the weeks and have students go by the unit indicator at the bottom of the review page. In total, there are 33 weeks
of spiral review.
How Many Skills are Addressed?
Each week is divided into five separate days for spiral review. The days are not labelled Monday – Friday, but instead are labelled Day 1 – 5 just in case a day is missed, or the review is started on a day other than Monday. Each day is divided into four review sections. The top two – three sections will be a spiral review of a previous skill, and the bottom one or two sections will be a review of current unit concepts. The goal is to expose and provide students with a consistent in-depth review of mathematics skills so they can retain them and apply them when needed.
The order of the skills are:
Numbers to 1,000,000
Order of Operations
Area and Perimeter (rectangles, parallelograms, triangles, trapezoids)
Graphing and Data Organization
Multiplication and Relationships
Division and Relationships
Fractions and Fraction Operations (Division by Whole Numbers, Addition, Subtraction)
Expressions and Equations
Volume and Surface Area (Rectangular Prisms)
Rates, Ratios, and Percents
How are Students Assessed?
Students are assessed using a Spiral Math Review Record. This record is included as two formats – one is presented with an area to mark whether students have correctly or incorrectly answered the question for each of the four questions.
