Grade 7 Science Unit E: Planet Earth Performance Assessment

Scenario:

After centuries of searching, a sister Earth is discovered.  Initial probe sampling determined the planet has an atmosphere similar to Earth’s as well as oceans, continents, non-toxic plants, and single cellular and multicellular organisms. A robotic rover collected images from 170 million acres around the landing site, and the world’s finest astronauts (from NASA, CNSA, JAXA, CSA, and the ESA) are preparing for an expedition to Sister Earth.  As a world renowned geologist you will remain on Earth as  part of a scientific team tasked to advise the expedition on where and how to perform geological sampling. You will analyze images from the robotic rover and expedition, complete a report, and present your findings to a panel of government authorities who hope Sister Earth is viable for colonization.

Curriculum Outcomes: Most Unit Outcomes! This project is an assessment, test review, webquest/research report, and rock and mineral identification tool.

Specific to this task:

  • A K-W-L chart (Appendix A) for pre-assessment and formative assessment.
  • A list of useful websites (Appendix B) may be used to research and complete  Part 1 of the Geological Report (Appendix F)
  • Once students have completed each part of the Geological Report, they will check in with the teacher for formative assessment (Appendix C).
  • A map of the rover landing site with terrain images (Appendix D) and a list of useful websites (Appendix B)  will be used to complete Part 2 of the Geological Report (Appendix F) .
  • An Expedition Report and Samples Inventory (Appendix E) will be analyzed to complete Part 3 of the Geological Report (Appendix F).
  • Checklist, Presentation Criteria, and Rubric (Appendix G).
  • Students will complete a Self reflection/ Group reflection (Appendix H).
