In the Grade 7 Factors, Multiples and Order of Operations
unit, students learn about what multiples and factors are and how to generate multiples and factors using a variety of tools and strategies. Students also learn about perfect squares and square roots and they are asked to represent perfect squares and square roots using a variety of tools as well. The final portion of this unit has students practice solving problems involving the order of operations.
This packet is aligned with the 2005 Ontario Mathematics curriculum. It addresses the following overall expectations:
- Represent, compare, and order numbers, including integers.
- Demonstrate an understanding of addition and subtraction of fractions and integers, and apply a variety of computational strategies to solve problems involving whole numbers and decimal numbers.
This packet also addresses the following specific expectations:
- Generate multiples and factors, using a variety of tools and strategies.
- Represent perfect squares and square roots, using a variety of tools.
- Evaluate expressions that involve whole numbers and decimals, including expressions that contain brackets, using order of operations.
Please note that this packet only has students work with whole numbers, rather than decimal numbers.
What lessons are included in this packet?
There are 12 lessons included in this packet that address each of the above specific expectations. Some of the lessons introduce students to new mathematical concepts and content, and other lessons have students review previously learned math concepts and content.
The lessons included in this packet are as follows. Each lesson takes approximately 60 minutes or 1 math period:
Lesson 1.1: What is a Multiple?
Lesson 1.2: Working with Multiples
Lesson 1.3: What is a Factor?
Lesson 1.4: Working with Factors
Lesson 1.5: Reviewing Multiples and Factors
Lesson 1.6: Factors and Multiples Quiz
Lesson 1.7: Square Roots
Lesson 1.8: Squaring and Square roots
Lesson 1.9: Order of Operations
Lesson 1.10: Order of Operations
Lesson 1.11: All About Exponents
Lesson 1.12: Let's Review
What activities are included in this packet?
This packet contains 19 activities for students to complete. Each lesson is accompanied by a partner/small group problem to solve along with an independent practice review sheet. There are review spinners included in this packet to help students review key concepts such as order of operations, generating multiples and factors and identifying square roots and perfect squares. This packet also includes a "Math Scramble" activity where students are given four sets of six cards. Each set of cards has letters that students are asked to unscramble. Students obtain the letters by correctly solving the order of operation question. Students record their responses on the recording sheet provided and unscramble the word once they are finished solving all questions in the set.
What assessments are included in this packet?
There are answer keys presented in this packet along with math journal responses, one rubric to assess the math journal response, checklists and exit cards. Students can complete the exit cards to show what they have learned, and the teacher can complete the checklists to check for understanding with students. A "Daily Math Problem" page is included with 15 sets of 3 problems. Students can solve these problems at the beginning of the math lesson, or when they are finished with the math lesson. There is one quiz and one test included in this packet.
