The Grade 7 Canada 1800 – 1850: Conflict and Challenges
is aligned with the Ontario History curriculum. With this unit, students analyze aspects of lives of different groups in Canada between 1800 and 1850 and compare them to the lives of individuals in Canada between 1713 and 1800. Students then explore the significant events, developments and people in Canada between 1800 and 1850 and they are asked to explain the impact of these events on Canada. Students also explore the challenges that faced individuals and/or groups in Canada between 1800 and 1850.
The overall expectations addressed in this packet are:
- Analyze aspects of the lives of various groups in Canada between 1800 and 1850, and compare them to the lives of people in Canada in 1713 – 1800.
- Use the historical inquiry process to investigate perspectives of different groups on some significant events, developments, and/or issues that affected Canada and/or Canadians between 1800 and 1850.
- Describe various significant events, developments, and people in Canada between 1800 and 1850, and explain their impact.
The big ideas addressed in this packet are:
- Throughout Canadian history, people have struggled to meet challenges and to improve their lives.
- The first half of the nineteenth century was a time of major conflict and change in Canada.
- Social and political conflicts and changes in the first half of the nineteenth century have had a lasting impact on Canada.
