The Grade 7, Unit 3: Data Management Activity Packet
is the third math unit in the Grade 7 math series. This packet is aligned with the 2005 Ontario Mathematics curriculum expectations for Grade 7: Data Management. With this packet, students are introduced to what relative frequency tables and circle graphs are. Students learn how to construct the relative frequency tables and circle graphs. Students also explore the connections between relative frequency tables and circle graphs.
What overall expectations does this packet address?
The overall expectations that this packet addresses are:
- Collect and organize categorical, discrete, or continuous primary data and secondary data and display the data using charts and graphs, including relative frequency tables and circle graphs.
- Make and evaluate convincing arguments, based on the analysis of data.
What lessons are included in this packet
This packet contains 11 lessons. These lessons either have students practice interpreting graphs, understand how to appropriately collect data, and/or how to construct graphs.
Lesson 3.1: Line Graphs
Lesson 3.2: Frequency Tables
Lesson 3.3: Relative Frequency Tables
Lesson 3.4: Circle Graphs
Lesson 3.5: Creating Circle Graphs
Lesson 3.6: Census vs. Sample
Lesson 3.7: Bias in Data
Lesson 3.8: Misleading Data
Lesson 3.9: Central Tendency
Lesson 3.10: Talking about Data
Lesson 3.11: Creating Graphs
What activities are included in this packet?
This packet includes 25 activities that help students to practice and meet all of the specific and overall expectations that this unit addresses. Each lesson is accompanied by either one or two activities that have students practice the skills addressed in each lesson. There is also plenty of opportunity for independent practice.
What assessments are included in this packet?
There are some answer keys provided in this packet. These answer keys have the non open-ended questions with answers, but the open responses do not have answers. There are also two assignments included in this packet:
Assignment 3.1: Relative Frequency Tables
Assignment 3.2: Creating Graphs
There are three rubrics provided in this packet along with three checklists, and five exit cards.
