The Grade 7 – Unit 3: “Pure Substances and Mixtures” unit. This activity packet provides you with lessons, activities, readings and rubrics that can be used to address the following Grade 7 Ontario Science overall expectations:
- Evaluate the social and environmental impacts of the use and disposal of pure substances and mixtures;
- Investigate the properties and applications of pure substances and mixtures;
- Demonstrate an understanding of the properties of pure substances and mixtures, and describe these characteristics using the particle theory.
This packet is also designed to address the following big ideas:
- Matter can be classified according to its physical characteristics;
- The particle theory of matter helps to explain the physical characteristics of matter;
- Pure substances and mixtures have an impact on society and the environment;
- Understanding the characteristics of matter allows us to make informed choices about how we use it;
What LESSONS are included in this packet?
This packet is thorough in the sense that it includes 25 lessons. Some lessons are designed to set the stage for students in terms of content knowledge and terminology, and other lessons are designed to have students further investigate substances.

Each lesson plan also includes a side bar that lists the expectation addressed, learning goal, materials needed, assessment and the success criteria for the lesson. The lessons at a glance pages at the beginning of the unit provide you with a connection to the big idea, guiding questions and the learning that students will be able to complete by the end of the lesson.
There are 32 activity worksheets, 10 readings, 1 test, 2 assignments and 7 reflection cards included in this packet. There are also 3 experiment booklets presented in this packet.
What ASSESSMENTS are included?
There are 2 assignments included in this packet that have students demonstrate their understanding of the above curriculum expectations. There are 7 rubrics to assess student understanding of the concepts addressed in this unit. Please note that there are a few answer keys provided in this packet, as many activities involve an open answer and it is up to you to determine whether students have appropriately demonstrated their knowledge. There is a final test along with a grading guide.
