This activity packet is aligned with the Ontario Mathematics curriculum. This packet addresses the following specific expectations:
- Represent and compare integers, using a variety of tools;
- Add and subtract integers, using a variety of tools;
What do the lessons look like?
This packet includes 7 lessons and 14 activity worksheets that help to meet the above curriculum expectations. The lessons are:
Lesson 6.1 - What are Integers?
Lesson 6.2 - Ordering Integers
Lesson 6.3 - Comparing Integers
Lesson 6.4 - Adding Integers
Lesson 6.5 - Subtracting Integers
Lesson 6.6 - Adding & Subtracting Integers
Lesson 6.7 - Using Counters to Represent Integer Equations
The lessons are intended to be used in a 60 minute math block, with an additional 10 - 20 minutes of practice for the skill that was covered in the lesson. Each lesson includes a lesson introduction, core learning activity and a lesson consolidation. A materials list is included - although you do not need additional materials other than red/yellow counters.
A strong focus is placed on adding and subtracting integers as this can be a tricky task for some students. Students, in this packet, learn how to:
- Add positive & negative integers as well as negative & negative integers;
- Subtract positive & positive integers, positive & negative integers, negative & positive integers as well as negative & negative integers.
What ASSESSMENTS are included?
Great question! I have tried to include a variety of math assessments to help guide student learning and understanding throughout the unit. There are 4 exit cards included, a math rubric to be used with the final Integers quiz, and skill checklists (for adding and subtracting integers).
