This download contains two packages for Grade 8 Confederation:
One for ESL (Stage 1/2 with jot notes and less writing) and one for IEP students (Special education, SSC, struggling students, or a Community class with full sentences and simpler language). The activities included are simple (e.g., cloze reading, connections to self, visuals).
Both packages meet curriculum expectations, and can also be used for classrooms without textbooks. I have noticed that textbooks are often at, or above reading level, and many students find them confusing. This download takes the information and turns it into simple readings with visuals.
-Life in British North America (e.g., social, gender roles)
-Politics (e.g., political deadlock in the Canadas)
-Economy (e.g., what each colony had to offer)
-8 Reasons for Confederation (each on a separate page)
It has been next to impossible to find special education or ESL resources for Intermediate History, which is why I have created these packages. Your struggling students can finally cover the same expectations at the same time as the rest of the class.
It is also ideal for students who are not below level, but find the textbook confusing. I make a copy for all my IEP or struggling students to use as study notes.
The package can theoretically be completed in 11 classes as there are 11 topics. Depending on the length of time you wish to spend on each, it could take you longer or shorter.
Based on new Ontario Curriculum expectations. I'm sure the package would work anywhere in Canada as it covers the issue of Confederation from sea to sea :)
The packages are designed for struggling students so there are a lot of spaces and visuals. Each package is about 30 pages. It opens as a Word document so you can print/edit what you'd like.
