With the Grade 8 - Unit 4: Human Development and Sexual Health
unit, students learn about factors that affect an individual’s decisions about sexual activity and sources of support for sexual health. Students also explore what gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation are and the importance of embracing each of the above in terms of diversity. Students also explore issues related to sexual health and safety with topics such as consent, contraception and STIs. Finally, students explore the benefits, risks, and drawbacks of entering into a relationship and learn about the difference between a healthy relationship and an unhealthy relationship.
The specific expectations addressed are:
- Identify and explain factors that can affect an individual’s decisions about sexual activity and identify sources of support regarding sexual health.
- Demonstrate an understanding of gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation and identify factors that can help individuals of all identities and orientations develop a positive self-concept.
- Demonstrate an understanding of aspects of sexual health and safety, including contraception and condom use for pregnancy and STI prevention, the concept of consent, and matters they need to consider and skills they need to use in order to make safe and healthy decisions about sexual activity.
- Analyze the attractions and benefits associated with being in a relationship, as well as the benefits, risks, and drawbacks, for themselves and others, of relationships involving different degrees of sexual intimacy.

This packet includes 5 rubrics that can be used to assess the three assignments, and a few other select activities. Students are also presented with a reflection journal that they can complete with this unit. With this reflection journal, students are asked to write about something they have learned or that they are wondering after each lesson or every other lesson. Students are asked to write their reflections in full sentences, and are asked to write meaningful entries that show inquiry and learning.
Please note that there are no formal answer keys presented in this packet as many of the activities and questions presented in this packet are open-ended.
