In the Grade 8: Global Settlement - Patterns and Sustainability
unit students are continuing to explore the Earth’s physical features and processes and how they are connected to human settlement patterns around the world. In this unit, students focus on where people live and why they live there. Students also focus on the importance of developing sustainable communities.
This activity packet provides you with lessons, activities, readings and rubrics that can be used to address the following Grade 8 Geography overall expectations:
- Analyze some significant interrelationships between Earth’s physical features and processes and human settlement patterns, and some ways in which the physical environment and issues of sustainability may affect settlement in the future.
- Use the geographic inquiry process to investigate issues related to the interrelationship between human settlement and sustainability from a geographic perspective.
- Demonstrate an understanding of significant patterns and trends related to human settlement and of ways in which human settlement affects the environment.
This packet also addresses the following big ideas:
- We need to develop sustainable communities that function within the limits of our physical environment.
- Human settlement can cause social, environmental, and economic problems.
- Human settlement patterns are affected by the natural environment and also affect the natural environment.

This packet is thorough in the sense that it includes 20 in-depth lessons that help to cover the specific and overall expectations as well as the big ideas. Some lessons are designed to set the stage for students in terms of content knowledge and terminology, and other lessons are designed to have students further investigate the impact of global settlements. There are 45 activity worksheets, 7 readings, 7 self-reflection cards, and 6 rubrics. Several of the activities presented in this packet can be used as assignments, but it is up to your discretion to use them as such. There are also 6 exit cards presented in this packet that can be used at the end of a lesson to identify what students have learned about the concepts addressed in this unit.
What assessments are included?
There are 7 rubrics to assess student understanding of the concepts addressed in this unit. Please note that there are only a few answer keys provided in this packet, as many activities involve an open answer and it is up to you to determine whether students have appropriately demonstrated their knowledge. There is one quiz midway through the unit. There is no final test as students had previously demonstrated their understanding of the unit concepts in a variety of other ways.

There are two assignments presented in this unit:

Assignment 1.2: Sustainable Communities
There are other mini-assignments presented in this unit, but they are considered to be activities. They do include rubrics and the standard format for assignments presented in my other packets.
