The Grade 8 - Unit 1: Healthy Eating
unit, students explore what macro- and micronutrients are and what the difference is between the two along with their functions. Students are also asked to evaluate their own personal food choices and identify the particular aspects that might be missing from their diets. The final expectation of this unit has students identify strategies for promoting healthy eating at school, in the home, and in the community. This packet is aligned with the Ontario 2015 Health and Physical Education curriculum document.
The specific expectations addressed in this packet are:
- Demonstrate an understanding of different types of nutrients and their functions.
- Evaluate personal food choices on the basis of a variety of criteria, including serving size, nutrient content, energy value, and ingredients, preparation method, and other factors that can affect health and well being.
- Identify strategies for promoting healthy eating within the school, home, and community.

This unit includes 15 in-depth lessons. These lessons have students explore what nutrients are, the impact of healthy eating on the human body, and why it is important to promote healthy eating strategies in a variety of environments. The lessons that are included in this packet are:

This packet includes 7 rubrics that can be used to assess the six assignments, and a few other select activities. Students are also presented with a reflection journal that they can complete with this unit. With this reflection journal, students are asked to write about something they have learned or that they are wondering after each lesson or every other lesson. Students are asked to write their reflections in full sentences, and are asked to write meaningful entries that show inquiry and learning.
Please note that there are no formal answer keys presented in this packet as many of the activities and questions presented in this packet are open-ended.
