In the Grade 8: Global Inequalities – Economic Development and Quality of Life
unit students are asked to explore issues related to global development and quality of life. Students study factors that affect economic development and quality of life on a global level and examine responses to global inequalities. Students are also introduced to scatter graphs and population pyramids to help them study global development and/or quality of life.
This activity packet provides you with lessons, activities, readings and rubrics that can be used to address the following Grade 8 Geography overall expectations:
- Analyze some interrelationships among factors that contribute to global inequalities, with a focus on inequalities in quality of life, and assess various responses to these inequalities.
- Use the geographic inquiry process to investigate issues related to global development and quality of life from a geographic perspective.
- Demonstrate an understanding of significant patterns in and factors affecting economic development and quality of life in different regions of the world.
This packet also addresses the following big ideas:
- Quality of life and economic development around the world are influenced by various factors.
- Issues related to inequalities in global development and quality of life can have social, environmental, political and/or economic implications.
- Use measurable indicators to help us understand spatial patterns of wealth and development around the world.

There are 61 activity worksheets, 14 readings, 11 self-reflection cards, and 7 rubrics. Several of the activities presented in this packet can be used as assignments, but it is up to your discretion to use them as such. There are also 9 exit cards presented in this packet that can be used at the end of a lesson to identify what students have learned about the concepts addressed in this unit.
What assessments are included?
There are 7 rubrics to assess student understanding of the concepts addressed in this unit. Please note that there are no real answer keys in this packet. It is up to you to determine whether students have appropriately demonstrated their knowledge. There are two quizzes presented in this unit. There is no final test as students had previously demonstrated their understanding of the unit concepts in a variety of other ways.

There are other mini-assignments presented in this unit, but they are considered to be activities. They do include rubrics and the standard format for assignments presented in my other packets (i.e., title page for the booklet).
