The Grade 8 - Unit 3: Personal Safety and Injury Prevention
unit, students are introduced to what unintentional injuries are and the impact that unintentional injuries have on an individual in terms of their psychological, social, emotional and physical well-being. Students explore common injuries such as traumatic brain injuries and are able to identify the parts of the body that are the most affected by these types of injuries. Students then explore the impact that violence has on individuals in terms of their psychological, social, emotional, and physical well-being. Students are then asked to identify the difference between what a healthy and what an unhealthy relationship looks like. Students finally explore what the importance is of establishing a healthy relationship, and are given resources that they can use for support services for violence and abuse. This packet is aligned with the Ontario 2015 Health and Physical Education curriculum document.
The specific expectations addressed are:
- Identify situations that could lead to injury or death and describe behaviours that can help to reduce risk.
- Demonstrate the ability to assess situations for potential dangers and apply strategies for avoiding dangerous situations.
- Analyze the impact of violent behaviours, including aggression, anger, swarming, dating violence, and gender-based or racially based violence, on the person being targeted, the perpetrator, and bystanders, and describe the role of support services in preventing violence.

This packet includes 4 rubrics that can be used to assess the three assignments, and a few other select activities. Students are also presented with a reflection journal that they can complete with this unit. With this reflection journal, students are asked to write about something they have learned or that they are wondering after each lesson or every other lesson. Students are asked to write their reflections in full sentences, and are asked to write meaningful entries that show inquiry and learning.
Please note that there are no formal answer keys presented in this packet as many of the activities and questions presented in this packet are open-ended.
