The Grade 9, Unit 3: Substance Use, Addictions, and Related Behaviours activity packet is aligned with the Ontario 2015 Health and Physical Education curriculum expectations for Grades 9 - 12. This packet addresses the Grade 9 Health expectations for the substance use, addictions, and related behaviours strand.

This packet introduces students to what the difference is between risk and protective factors. Students learn about how risk and protective factors can affect our choices we make related to substance use and addictions. Students also explore social factors that may influence substance use or behaviours that might lead to addictions. Students, finally, explore how decision-making and communication skills can be used to respond effectively to these influences.

The overall expectations that this packet addresses are:
- Demonstrate an understanding of factors that contribute to healthy development.
- Demonstrate the ability to make connections that relate to health and well-being – how their choices and behaviours affect both themselves and others, and how factors in the world around them affect their own and others’ health and well-being.

The specific expectations that this packet addresses are:
- Demonstrate an understanding of resilience and related protective and risk factors, and explain how these can affect choices related to substance us and addictions.
- Describe social factors that may influence substance use or behaviours leading to addictions and explain how decision-making and communication skills can be used to respond effectively to these influences.

Assignment 3.3: Substance Use, Addictions, and Related Behaviours Journal

Each assignment is accompanied by a rubric that can be used to assess the assignment. There are 47 activity pages included in this packet, along with 10 readings. Each reading is also accompanied by an activity worksheet that has students dive into the key concepts presented in each reading.

What assessments are included in this packet?
There are no answer keys presented in this activity packet. The questions presented for the reflections, and the activity worksheets are more open-ended. As long as students are able to justify and complete a coherent answer, the response would be accurate.

There are also 7 rubrics included in this packet. These rubrics can be used to assess key learning, and identify where students need to improve for the next time. There are 5 exit cards, and 3 self-assessments presented in this packet as well. These assessment tools can be used to identify what students already know, what students' understanding is of the content, and where students need to go to next.
